Planá Chateau
History of the building
Planá Chateau is located on the western edge of the town of Planá in the Tachov district. The complex originated in the 13th century as a Gothic castle. Its first documented owner, in the mid-14th century, was Dobrohost of Planá. In the 15th century, the castle passed into the hands of Jindřich of Elsterberg, who initiated its expansion and transformation into a three-wing layout. This configuration remained largely preserved under Aleš of Žeberk and his descendants until the mid-16th century. In the 16th century, the estate came into possession of the Šlik family. Under Mořic and Kašpar Šlik, the original Gothic castle was converted into a representative Renaissance château. After 1665, when the estate was acquired by the Sinzendorf family, further reconstruction took place in the Baroque style, affecting both façades and interiors. From 1822 onward, the château was owned by the Nostitz (Nostitz-Rieneck) family, during whose tenure Neoclassical and Empire-style modifications were carried out in the first half of the 19th century, particularly on the northeastern two-story wing.
Following nationalization in 1948, the château served as barracks for the Border Guard until 1990. The complex was later divided among multiple private owners. Although Countess Mathilda Nostitz attempted to reclaim the château through restitution, the fragmented ownership structure ultimately led to gradual neglect and deterioration.
Planá Chateau is an important cultural monument, not only for its architectural value, which documents the evolution from Gothic through Renaissance and Baroque to Empire, but also for its historical connections to prominent noble families, including the Šliks, Sinzendorfs, and Nostitz family. We believe it has the potential to once again become a vibrant part of the region’s cultural and social life.
Our contribution
We acquired the property in 2017. Only a few months later, the château was severely damaged by a fire caused by vandalism, which completely destroyed the roof structures of the western wing. Since then, extensive stabilization and restoration works have been carried out across various parts of the château complex, supported in part by grants from the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the Pilsen Region, and the Town of Planá.
By 2025, we successfully completed the reconstruction of the roof structure and installation of new roofing, including sheet metal elements, on the fire-damaged western wing. Roof trusses were also repaired and partially replaced on the eastern Renaissance wing (the so-called “Castle”), where temporary roofing was installed. In addition, the entire three-part Baroque roof structure of the former château stables was fully reconstructed, followed by the installation of temporary roofing.
