History of the building

The chateau, originally a water fortress in Popovice near Benešov in the Central Bohemian Region, is a significant historical monument with a rich and varied past. The first written mention of the fortress dates back to 1354, when it was owned by Ondřej of Popovice. It is presumed, however, that it was founded in the 13th century. In the 14th century, the fortress was surrounded by a mistake, fed by a nearby pond, and was accessible via a drawbridge. During the Hussite Wars, the fortress was conquered by Mikuláš of Hus in 1420. From 1488, it was owned by the Popovští of Bezejovic, who rebuilt it in the Renaissance style. The originally Gothic building was expanded into a Renaissance chateau in the 16th century, as evidenced by the preserved sgraffito decoration of the facade, especially on the north wing. Gothic windows and doors with pointed arches have been preserved on the ground floor. In the 18th century, it was modified in the Baroque style, especially during the reign of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star. In the 19th century, it was used for industrial purposes, for example, as a weaving mill and a distillery. After 1989, it was returned in restitution and gradually began to be reconstructed. Today, the fortress is a protected cultural monument and represents a significant document of the development of noble residences from Gothic through Renaissance to Baroque. We acquired the property in 2025, and we are currently considering its future direction and use.
